• Days are hot and clear, but evening in Laikipia, Lewa and Mara can be cold
• We’re in the dry season, so only occasional short spells of rain occur, usually in the afternoon
• It’s getting hotter throughout the month, and the water temperature around Kenya’s coast averages to 81 degrees
• Take layers for safari, including light waterproofs just in case

The Maasai Mara National Reserve receives just five days of rain in January and eight sunshine hours daily

February’s hot and dry conditions are fantastic not only for classic vehicles and walking safaris but for horse riding and other activities too.

• Days are clear and dry, with infrequent rainfall
• We’re well into the dry season, though there are slim possibilities of cloud and rain on Diani Beach
• The average water temperature for Diani and other coastal regions is 82 degrees
• It can be cold at night so pack layers
• The Maasai Mara National Reserve gets just three days of rain

March starts quite humid, with high temperatures and good visibility of wildlife due to short grasses. Near the end of the month, the rains begin.

• It can be hot and humid, especially in inland areas at the beginning of March
• The season of long rains begins at the end of the month or beginning of April
• Temperatures are moderately high but cool in the evening

Travel in April is not recommended due to heavy rains

May is characterized by the rains, which can make wildlife sightings challenging and reduced vehicle access through safari areas, but breathtakingly beautiful green landscapes.

• We’re approaching the end of the long rains season, so it’s still very wet
• Temperatures remain high, including in coastal areas, but cool at night
• It’s recommended to have waterproofs available or a mixture of layers

Emerging from the long rains, June is a great time of year to be on safari, with pleasant temperatures and low humidity and wildlife sightings increasing.

• Days are comfortable and nights are occasionally cool at high altitudes
• Drier and cooler conditions predominate as we emerge from the long rains
• Temperatures are comfortable
• It can be variable, so we suggest packing layers and a light waterproof coat
• The Kusi monsoon sometimes brings rains at the beginning of June

It’s Great Migration time! Come July the first herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelles enter the Maasai Mara for the thrilling river crossings – and dry conditions are superb for safari everywhere.

• Both day and night temperatures are cooler and drier than June
• The Maasai Mara National Reserve and Laikipia are chilly as they’re at higher altitudes than other safari areas

August sees the Great Migration herds settling to graze in the Maasai Mara, and dry conditions ensure fantastic wildlife viewing throughout Kenya’s parks and reserves.

• Days are sunny and hot, while nights are cool especially in higher areas
• We’re in the dry season, and August is one of Kenya’s least humid months
• Water temperatures hit on average 77 degrees
• It’s hot enough for light layers
• Coastal areas benefit from very little to no rainfall, and low humidity

September brings the Great Migration herds grazing in the Maasai Mara, and there’s generally excellent wildlife viewing to enjoy during this dry-season month of the year.

• Temperatures increase as the month progresses
• It’s hot enough for T-shirts and shorts or light trousers but still take layers for the evening

October wildlife viewing is fantastic due to dry conditions, and the herds of the Great Migration are grazing in the Maasai Mara.

• We’re in the dry season, so the likelihood of rainfall is very small
• Temperatures are warm to very warm but cold in the evenings
• It’s shorts and t-shirts or light trousers are appropriate choices

Kenya’s short rains season begins in November – wildlife viewing may become more challenging near the end of November beginning of December. This is an excellent month to see newborn animals

• Days are hot however mornings and evenings become cooler near the end of the month
• November marks the beginning of Kenya’s short rains season
• Temperatures range from 75 to 86 degrees during the day
• It’s hot enough for light layers, and you might like to bring a waterproof shell for late afternoon and evening rain

The short rains begin to clear from mid-December leading to January’s dry conditions. Consider celebrating the New Year in Kenya with the wildlife.
